NARRATOR: Long before the great war of Kurukshetra, the mighty Kuru Dynasty ruled northern Bharat. The kingdom stands glorious beside the sacred river Ganga. People prosper. Warriors train. The royal banner waves proudly. SCENE 2 – KING SHANTANU MEETS GANGA SETTING: Riverbank at sunset. King Shantanu sees a breathtaking woman. It is Goddess Ganga in human form. Shantanu instantly falls in love. SHANTANU Who are you, beautiful lady? GANGA I shall marry you, but you must never question anything I do. Shantanu agrees. They marry. SCENE 3 – THE SEVEN CHILDREN One by one, seven babies are born. Each time Ganga carries the infant to the river. She immerses the child into the water. Shantanu watches in agony. But he remembers his promise. He remains silent. SCENE 4 – DEVAVRATA IS SAVED The eighth child is born. Ganga walks toward the river again. This time Shantanu stops her. SHANTANU Enough! Why are you killing our children? Ganga smiles. GANGA You have broken your promise. She reveals her divine form. The children were celestial beings cursed to be born on Earth. The eighth child must remain. This child is Devavrata. Future Bhishma. Ganga departs with the child. ACT 2 – THE TERRIBLE VOW OF BHISHMA SCENE 5 – THE RETURN OF DEVAVRATA Years later. A magnificent warrior arrives. Armed with celestial weapons. It is Devavrata. His knowledge surpasses every prince. His power terrifies every warrior. SCENE 6 – SHANTANU FALLS IN LOVE AGAIN Shantanu meets Satyavati. A fisher chief's daughter. He wishes to marry her. But her father demands: FISHER KING Only Satyavati's son shall become king. Shantanu cannot agree. He returns heartbroken. SCENE 7 – THE GREAT VOW Devavrata learns the truth. He visits the fisher king. Before thousands he makes history. DEVAVRATA I renounce the throne forever. The crowd gasps. Then he continues. DEVAVRATA I shall never marry. I shall never have children. Silence. The heavens tremble. Flowers rain from the sky. Gods declare: GODS He shall be known as Bhishma! The Terrible One. ACT 3 – BIRTH OF THE KAURAVAS AND PANDAVAS SCENE 8 – THE BIRTH OF DHRITARASHTRA AND PANDU Generations pass. The throne eventually reaches two princes. Dhritarashtra is born blind. Pandu becomes king. SCENE 9 – THE CURSE OF PANDU While hunting in a forest. Pandu accidentally kills a sage. The dying sage curses him. SAGE The moment you embrace your wife, you shall die. Pandu is devastated. SCENE 10 – THE BIRTH OF THE PANDAVAS Kunti possesses a divine mantra. She invokes the gods. One by one are born: Yudhishthira Bhima Arjuna Madri later gives birth to: Nakula Sahadeva The five Pandavas are born. Destined to change history. ACT 4 – THE BIRTH OF DURYODHANA SCENE 11 Gandhari gives birth. An unnatural cry echoes. Animals howl. Storms rage. The child is Duryodhana. Wise men predict disaster. VIDURA This child may destroy the kingdom. But Dhritarashtra refuses to abandon him. ACT 5 – CHILDHOOD RIVALRY SCENE 12 – THE JEALOUSY OF DURYODHANA Young Bhima defeats everyone in games. Duryodhana's jealousy grows daily. SCENE 13 – ATTEMPTED MURDER Duryodhana poisons Bhima. Bhima is thrown into a river. Everyone believes he is dead. But the Nagas rescue him. He gains immense strength. Stronger than ever before. ACT 6 – THE GURU DRONA SCENE 14 Drona becomes royal teacher.
