  1. #1That was my first true sight. It was the color of polished obsidian, but softened by the dappled brightness that filtered through the canopy of bright fluttering things, far above. A snout, larger than anything I could comprehend, lowered itself towards me, with a breeze from it I feel on my bottom, still learning my legs. Two eyes, like molten gold, blinked slowly, and in them, I saw myself reflected, a tiny, fragile hatchling, all awkward limbs and damp skin. A soft, wet nudge pushed me, not unkindly, just…there. It was my mother. I knew it with a certainty that bypassed thought, a primal recognition that settled deep within my nascent being.
  2. #2For the entirety of my existence, well until now of course, I have had infinity to grow. But now the world feels like it's closing in, an invisible Force pinning against me from every place I feel. It is quite uncomfortable for a few moments. Until there is a crack. Not a violent splintering, but a soft, yielding sound, like a sigh of relief from within. My first awareness was of a gentle warmth, a pressure that eased as the shell gave way, revealing not darkness, but a blinding, brilliant brightness. It stung me from where I observe, a piece of myself I have not known until now, forcing them to blink and squeeze, to adjust to this sudden, overwhelming existence. I tumbled out, a clumsy, slick thing, onto a surface that was rough yet strangely comforting.
