That was what Drew Jones believed.
It listened when you cursed at a snagged line, when the wind carried a laugh too far, when you sat quietly and let the sun warm your shoulders. It remembered things—old things—things even the forest seemed to have forgotten.
Which was why it unsettled him when the water refused to answer back.
“Bad day for fishing,” Bill Romon muttered, flicking his whiskers as he adjusted the strap of his crimson-and-gold robes.
Bill was a rat, yes—but not the mischievous sort wandering the outskirts of the forest. He carried himself like a man long accustomed to being trusted. His robes were kept immaculate, each fold a quiet declaration of order and tradition, and the staff in his hand glowed faintly, steady, controlled. His wide eyes reflected thought more than watchfulness, and his calm voice drew attention without demanding it. Only those who pressed him noticed the hesitation, the way his fingers tightened around the staff when courage demanded certainty.
Drew glanced at him without a word. He didn’t need to—Bill had always been able to read him, and Drew trusted that more than anyone else.
Drew himself was a lizardfolk of the forest, upright and solid like a seasoned laborer, his body covered in muted green scales that caught the sunlight but dulled with age and labor. A ridged crest rose subtly from the crown of his head, a mark of his lineage, and his wide, alert eyes scanned the river with constant awareness. His blunt, expressive snout twitched now and then, betraying a mixture of curiosity and impatience.
Clawed fingers gripped his mechanical fishing rod—a harpoon-like tool with metal fittings worn smooth from years of maintenance. Drew’s tail, thick and heavy, curved behind him, balancing his weight as his broad, taloned feet pressed into the mud. He was not a warrior, not in the traditional sense. But his stance, steady and open, spoke of endurance, of someone who had learned to survive rather than dominate.”
