“Bro, you look dead,” Mateo whispered.
Leonardo smirked. “Just didn’t sleep much.”
That was the easiest lie to tell.
Across the room, Monique glanced at him, concerned. She had noticed the bruises, the way he flinched sometimes, the way he disappeared right after school.
“Are you okay?” she asked softly after class.
Leonardo nodded. “Yeah… just tired.”
But tired didn’t explain everything.”
