- #1“The gates of Chikushidake High School were less an entrance and more a suggestion-one that Imamura Kurouziki and her squad immediately decided to ignore. They didn't so much arrive as they manifested, a burst of color and noise against the muted backdrop of standard-issue uniforms. Kurouziki was at the center, bouncing off a gatepost with a grin. Flanking her were her two pillars of glorious chaos: Ikehara Junō, tall and sharp-edged with a severe dark bob and an impressive scowl that hid a fiercely loyal heart, and Koizumi Kanon, a bubbly pink-haired sparkplug who was already waving at strangers as if they were long-lost friends. "I give this place a week before it's properly livable," Junō declared, her hands on her hips as she critically eyed the school building. Her uniform was pristine but dramatically accessorized with a spiked choker and heavy boots that were definitely not regulation. "Oh, I don't know, Junō-chan! It has a certain... charmingly pathetic vibe!" Kanon chirped, spinning in a circle, her short, fluffy hair bouncing. Her socks were dramatically oversized, and her skirt was layered over another, more colorful one. Kurouziki just laughed, looping her arms through theirs. "C'mon, guys, be nice to the poor thing. It's trying its best." Her own uniform was a masterpiece of creative interpretation-blazer tied around her waist, sleeves rolled up, skirt shortened with strategic folds. Together, they were a triple threat of delightful anarchy. As they moved through the schoolyard, they were not a threat, but rather a fascinating spectacle. Students didn't part in fear; they gawked, intrigued by the walking fashion show and the palpable energy of fun radiating from the trio. A few first-years even looked relieved to see others who clearly didn't take the whole situation too seriously. Upon finding Classroom 1-B, Kurouziki entered with a cheerful, "Yoohoo! Am I in the right zoo?" Junō followed her in with a dismissive sniff at the decor, while Kanon beamed and added, "If not, we can redecorate!" Thankfully, their seats were clustered together. Kurouziki sat by the window, Kanon directly in front of her, and Junō right beside her. The homeroom teacher-a man who seemed to run on caffeine and regret-called roll. "Imamura, Kurouziki." "Presentissimo!" she chirped, giving a little two-fingered salute. "Ikehara, Junō." "Here," Junō said, her voice a flat, bored monotone that suggested she was already planning her escape. "Koizumi, Kanon." "Haiii! Happy to be here!" Kanon sang, waving her hand enthusiastically. The boy sitting behind Kurouziki, a lanky kid named Mijiro, looked utterly overwhelmed. "You three... know each other?" Kurouziki spun around. "Since forever! We're a package deal. I'm the brains," she announced, pointing a thumb at herself. Junō snorted. "Junō-chan is the brawn and the aesthetic," Kurouziki continued, ignoring her. "And Kanon-chan is the... uh..." "The morale!" Kanon supplied happily. "The morale!" Kurouziki agreed. "We're thinking of getting matching jackets." The morning lessons felt like a cage, and the three of them were not meant for cages. They passed notes-elaborately doodled ones from Kurouziki, sharply worded critiques of the teacher's lesson plan from Junō, and glittery sticker-filled notes from Kanon. When the teacher's back was turned, Kanon would turn around to make a face at Kurouziki, who would stifle a laugh into her textbook. Junō spent most of her time sketching elaborate gothic designs in her notebook, looking up only to roll her eyes at particularly boring comments. When lunchtime hit, they claimed a corner of the classroom as their own, pulling their desks together with a loud scrape. They unpacked their lunches: Kurouziki's was a chaotic mix of convenience store favorites, Junō's was a perfectly arranged bento that looked too artistic to eat, and Kanon's was overflowing with brightly colored, cute character snacks.
